Some beautiful pics from the Merry Monarch

Here are some very cool pictures from the Merry Monarch…the annual hula competition from the beautiful island of Hawai’i..the Big Island.  The hula is so very close to my heart, the dance, the meanings behind them, my sweet and very patient teacher, Nona Kaluhio’kalani, God rest her soul, she taught me so many things, I miss her so much.  The meaning of Aloha, I believe that was the most important thing, it’s a beautiful thing, Aloha.  The whole meaning is a way of life, unconditional love, hospitality, romantic love, the island way of life, so very much.  I was incredibly lucky to have experienced this, and so….the dance shows so very much of the culture and aloha spirit.  Enjoy these images.  I hope you do.  Aloha.

This top photo is from ancient hula, or Kahiko…so her face

is fierce and focused.  It’s the most difficult of the dances.

The single ladies are competing for the Miss Aloha

competition, and they are all smiles and beauty, for theirs

is the modern hula, the Auana.  Very lovely.

And below, are the group hula competitors, from all

over the islands.  The prizes are very coveted, and

the Merry Monarch was King David Kalakaua, who

dearly loved his Islands, and their culture, wanted to

preserve as much as he could, and this was named for him, for

the people of Hawai’i to participate in, and to share

their culture with the world.  Uncle George Naope was the founder.

These three pictures are the men, or Kane.  They are great to watch, too!!!

And here are a few more of the wahine group competition.

I loved this last picture, she has such a sweet little face,

you know she is just loving this!!
